SSBBW / FA Quote of the Moment

"We aren't our bodies - we are ourselves." ~ Kirstie Ally [Actress - former BBW]

Self Acceptance and Society/Fat Acceptance

Self acceptance is loving and appreciating yourself even if there are things you'd eventually like to change. Fat acceptance or society acceptance is getting society as a whole to accept that we have the same rights as everyone else and to reduce prejudice within the community.

Self-acceptance means unconditional appreciation and support for who you are now, including all the elements that you want to change.

Things you can do every day to boost your body image:

Spring makes me feel alive and gives me hope. Seeing the flowers pop up from ground that was frozen and covered in feet of snow for months; seeing the buds on trees that have been stripped bare and lain dormant for months in blistering cold and winds; hearing the birds singing as they arrive back from the south and begin making new nests I feel myself begin to bud as well. Live doesn't seem so bleak in the spring. There is an air of excitement of what is to come.

Take some time and enjoy the spring sounds and scents. Take a deep breath and relax and look forward to the future. Be positive and rise up from the bleakness with a song in your heart, just like spring.

A Mother's Greatest Lesson on Acceptance

For this May, I'd like to truly honor and thank my step-mother for being a presence of love and peace in my life. She has been a true presence of unwavering faith, love and compassion to me and my three siblings for over 30 years now. I consider her the only true mother I have ever known and I proudly call her "mom."

My step-mom came into our lives when we were adults. I had given birth to my second child just six months before her wedding to my father in 1990. They were married 26 years before my father chose to focus his attention on someone else and it tore apart not only their marriage, but our family as well.

Through it all, my step-mother suffered quietly, cried and prayed. We have witnessed her working through the undeniable seven stages of grief while maintaining a faith in God and family that helped her reach a well-deserved level of acceptance.

As I worked through my own disbelief, disappointment, anger and sadness, my Momma showed me that love, forgiveness, faith and acceptance are far more important than pride, ego, holding onto anger and regret. She showed me that her love is unconditional no matter what the circumstances and when it comes to family, I am always a part of her heart.

My step-mom is a rock. She's the poster girl for faith and acceptance as far as I'm concerned. If this amazing lady who is more than 70 years old, can suffer such a devastating loss and come out the other side of it standing tall, believing in herself and accepting the possibilities that await her, then surely I can too.

I urge you this Mother's Day to reach out to your own mother figure—whether mother, step-mother, sister, cousin, co-worker or friend—and let them know how much you appreciate their support, guidance and belief in you and your dreams. Like my step-mother, they are the weave that is the fabric we call life and without them, I imagine, life would not have the profound meaning it does.

Mother's Day is for celebrating the mother or mother figure who shaped us, supported us, believed in us, when it was sometimes difficult to do in the singular.

Happy Mother's Day to all.
