SSBBW / FA Quote of the Moment

"SSBBW's give the best Hugs...they really feel so...hugged." ~ Mike [FA]

Self Acceptance and Society/Fat Acceptance

Self acceptance is loving and appreciating yourself even if there are things you'd eventually like to change. Fat acceptance or society acceptance is getting society as a whole to accept that we have the same rights as everyone else and to reduce prejudice within the community.

Summer Lovin' ... Had Me a Blast!!!

Last summer I was so excited when my best friend asked me to be her Maid of Honor at her upcoming fall wedding. Now keep in mind that as a SSBBW, I was at first apprehensive to consider formal wear not to mention parading around in heels in front of wedding guests. But it wasn't about me. It was about supporting my friend.

My friend had been dating her beloved for 15 years and the two had decided there was really no reason they needed to get married. As two people in their 50s who had been married and divorced before and with grown children and now grandchildren, they were happy with things the way they were.

That all changed one day when her boyfriend had an epiphany that no matter what their feelings on marriage, he couldn't possibly imagine the rest of his life without her. With that, he surprised her one Friday evening with dinner and an unexpected and romantic marriage proposal and she said yes.

Their wedding was to be in October 2016 but three days before the wedding, her 25-year-old daughter died unexpectedly of a hereditary and misdiagnosed blood disorder. The marriage was to be postponed and two families came together instead to heal.

In those moments of grief and with the realization that an individual's problems or fears are often insignificant compared to others', I learned to give thanks for the blessings in my life and offer comfort, compassion and a ready, listening ear to my friend.

My friend's wedding was rescheduled for the summer of 2017 and every element of it was an appreciation of their love, lives, family and friends. I put aside my fears of looking fat in front of other people and remembered what this day was truly about - supporting the friend I treasure most in the world on her wedding day.

I have to say we looked pretty amazing all dressed up as countless memories were made through an outdoor ceremony surrounded by loved ones, a reception full of delicious food, flowing drinks and enthusiastic dancing.

In short, I had a blast because I allowed myself to and because I deserved to. This summer, I encourage you to be okay with celebrating the season and enjoying it to the fullest. Get out in the sunshine, do the things you want to do - regardless of what anyone else thinks or says - and acknowledge and enjoy all the blessings in your life.

Life's too short to sit on the sidelines and let summers slip by. Happy Summer to all!
