Lizzo, A True Star
Back? You, no doubt, now know that Lizzo is more than a pretty face. She is an accomplished entertainer who put in a lot of hard work over the years to get to where she is now.
This American pop artist started attracting mainstream attention with her album 'Cuz I love you' which debuted on the Billboard 200 earlier this year. She is not just a talented rapper and singer, but also fun, happy and positive!
After years of being body-shamed and struggling to accept and love herself, she has now become a strong advocate for body positivity and self-love. She is acknowledged as one of the most body-positive people in the pop culture and entertainment industry today.
While her status as a body positivity icon is irrefutable, Lizzo, wonders if there is a representation bias, where smaller women are criticised for near nude imagery, while she and other plus sized ladies, are praised for their bravery.
In a recent interview with Jameela Jamil, Lizzo talked about finding confidence and learning how to love herself and body. She said, "Someone's always going to have a critique; someone's always going to have some negativity to say about me. So all that matters is what I think of it. And I had to go deep inside myself and look in the mirror. Looking in the mirror and accepting what's in the mirror is very, very difficult. And right now, I love it every time I look in the mirror."
NPR) Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Gross asked about her album cover in which she brazenly posed nude. Gross said, "It sometimes bothers me 'cause I think like, oh, are you now making yourself into a sex object for men. But when you're doing it on your album cover, I think it's a bold statement, and it's a statement for women from women. Because you are trying to break the mold of what beauty is."
Lizzo responded, saying, "Yeah, but are you saying that because I am fat? Because I feel like if I were a thin woman, maybe that wouldn't be the case. I feel like women who are smaller aren't really given the opportunities to be body-positive or role models, because we've been conditioned to believe that such women are using their bodies for the male gaze. If I were slimmer, I don't think people would look to me with the same type of appreciation like, "Oh, wow; she's so brave; she's doing this and representing everyone."
Her response to Gross is everything! And we believe that Lizzo is actively and vocally changing the narrative about what society considers to be beautiful, while making sure that all body shapes and sizes are included.
There is something inexplicably attractive about a woman who loves and appreciates her appearance. Hopefully, Lizzo becomes one more good reason, SSBBWs flaunt their curves and live life unapologetically.
