Our Mission
SSBBW / FA Quote of the Moment

"Being attracted to a SSBBW, I can say with honesty and certainty that I find everything about a SSBBW to be a beautiful thing. From the large and soft curves of her body, to her large and open heart. A large woman often sees life as others do not; seeing everyday as precious, every moment as a moment to laugh and love, and those around them as people to treasure. Being a SSBBW is a blessing. With lots to offer, every large woman is unique, yet not alone. I am proud to be a man who loves and appreciates all you have to offer. Be proud of what you have, flaunt your beautiful curves, and let the world see that big smile." ~ John [FA]

Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay

In this book: Hunger: A Memoir of (my) Body, Author Roxane Gay, who is also the writer of another New York Times Bestseller, Bad Feminist, and prolific contributing writer of popular essays and other works in top magazines, publications and university courses around the world, opens up about her struggles with body acceptance, and exploring the places where love, pleasure, and food intertwine.

This book has gone on to become a New York Times bestseller, and was a National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist, and Lambda Literary Award winner.

In it, Roxane Gay writes with relatability and openness about food and bodies, using her personal physical, emotional and psychological struggles as a means of dissecting our shared anxieties over health, appearance, consumption and pleasure.

She casts an insightful, retrospective eye on her childhood and growing up, and brings readers into the present day with the realities, pains, and joys of daily life. She shares deeply personal and sometimes painful stories that may make some readers uncomfortable, but appeal sincerely to others who have experienced similar circumstances and events.

Below are our top three quotes from the book:

  1. 1. On growing up: "In our culture, we talk a lot about change and growing up, but man, we don’t talk nearly enough about how difficult it is. It is difficult." (p. 244)
  2. On acceptance: "Living in my body has expanded my empathy for other people and the truths of their bodies. Certainly, it has shown me the importance of inclusivity and acceptance (not merely tolerance) for diverse body types." (p. 297)
  3. On her body: "This body is resilient. It can endure all kinds of things. My body offers me the power of presence. My body is powerful." (p. 296)

Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay is a poignant memoir from a treasured writer of our generation. If you haven’t already, you can get a copy here.
