April Fool's Day may have uncertain origins about which there will be eternal disagreements. No one really knows.
Some researchers are crediting ancient cultures, like the Romans and Hindus who celebrated New Year's Day on or around April 1st (near the vernal equinox). Some believe it is related to the March 25th celebration of the Feast of Annunciation.
The most popular explanation is that of the "Fools" who chose to disregard the new Gregorian calendar ordered by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to replace the previous Julian calendar. This new calendar shifted the New Year to January 1st, from April 1st. Those who still called April 1st the beginning of the year were ostracized for going on a "fool's errand" in their denial.
Regardless of origin, April Fool's Day can be a time of trickery. But let's be NICE! No pulling out of chairs. No scaring the wits out of an innocent soul. Let's celebrate by bringing joy and whimsy through food! Surprise your loved ones with savory "cake" or healthy "fries".
Whatever you choose to do on this day of whimsy and mirth, do it with kindness and a sense of humor.
