Book Review: I Am That Girl: How to Speak Your Truth, Discover Your Purpose, and #BeThatGirl

Alexis Jones is the founder of I am that girl, a non-profit organization for the modern-day woman that seeks to provide leadership, social and personal development programming to ladies. She created the movement to remind girls of their innate and immeasurable self-worth. As a result, she constantly interacts with girls from various backgrounds and experiences.

Her motive for writing the book, I am that Girl, which bears the same name as her non-profit movement is to reach many more girls, share her learnings, mistakes, accomplishments and fights in life. She states that the moment of brilliance in life are usually balanced with moments of vulnerability, insecurity and self-doubt. Although this doesn't seem fair, it makes life unpredictable and worth living.

Her book is on a higher pedestal and serves as her way of allowing many more women to join the I am that Girl movement, impact girl culture, raise the standard for how ladies treat themselves and each other, and generally build a community for women to be heard and belong.

Jones curated personal stories of over 30 ladies in her life and wove them beautifully in the book. You can call the book a collage of personal candid stories, advice and inspiration from women across the world, reminding you of how unique, different and limitless we all are.

In a bid to acknowledge the highs and lows of life, she states that, "Life is not about picking out the parts you like and leaving the rest, it's learning to coexist with all parts and choosing to see the beauty, the grace, and the hilarity while also experiencing the inevitable disappointments and occasional failures."

Her book is divided into two sections - Gearing up for takeoff and Soaring 101.

The first part, Gearing Up for Takeoff preaches preparation for the journey ahead by building solid habits, living on your own terms and having a great work ethic that is void of excuses.

The second part, Soaring 101 covers how to build the confidence and tenacity to bless the world with your gifts, potential and dreams, learn from relationships and be unstoppable.

I am that Girl will help you discover who you are and remind you if you have forgotten. It tells us to stop waiting for perfect and stop worrying about the things that could go wrong.

Warms the low spot; upon its grassy mold
The purple oak-leaf falls; the birchen bough
drops its bright spoil like arrow-heads of gold."
