The Little Black Book of Style by Nina Garcia
I just read Nina Garcia's The Little Black Book of Style and I am blown away by her great sense of style and easy humour. Nina Garcia came into the limelight as a fashion expert and judge on the Project Runway. She has worked with various fashion magazines including Elle and Marie Claire, where she is currently the Creative Director.
The Little Black Book of Style is not the typical style book of dos and don'ts. It is not a book of rules. It is a book on style.
In her own words, "I am not going to tell you when to wear white pants or when to wear sandals. Instead, I am going to help you build your style confidence, find what works for you, edit your closet, teach you what to look for, and give you a few tricks of the trade."
Ruben Toledo created the fantastic fashion illustrations in the book to match her thoughts, making it even more attractive and easy to read.
Nina emphasizes on internal style and personal confidence rather than the adornment of clothing and exterior fashion to reflect a woman's beauty. Style comes from knowing who you are and who you want to be in the world; It does not come from wanting to be someone else or wanting to be thinner, shorter, taller, prettier. She shows her admiration for women who can love themselves, even if they are not the standard beauty norm.
She carves a fine line between when to be your own muse, original, listen to your inner voice and when to draw inspiration from other ladies and the world. To her, every lady should be able to take an idea from the world, adopt the element and then make it her own. She encourages ladies to find beauty in everything and to consciously notice the small details in everyday life.
This book is filled with Nina's smattering of suggestions, some personal philosophies, and a little bit of history. It also covers interviews with big names in the Fashion industry like Ralph Lauren, Cameron Silver, Elle Macpherson, Michael Kors. Iman, Frida Gianni and Donatella Versace.
She teaches women to embrace their imperfections and be confident. Confidence has nothing to do with aesthetics and everything to do with attitude. According to her, beauty has to be fueled by something inside. It doesn't mean a woman should not care about her looks; on the contrary, she should be so comfortable with who she is that she even embraces her quirks and flaws.
This book is a reminder that women can discover themselves and create a timeless style of convenience without following fashion fads. Click here to buy the book on Amazon and start the new year with a fresh perspective.
Happy New Year, everyone!
