3 Powerful Questions to Ask Yourself Before Deciding on A New Year's Resolution

If you were to describe 2016 in three words, what would those be? I would choose 'tough, setbacks, inspiring'.

I'm sure you've had your fair share of struggles too but you've got a choice for 2017. You can either just hurry ahead and make a long list of fresh resolutions. Or you can decide to:

So, grab a piece of paper and let's get started with questions to ask yourself before you decide what your New Year's resolution will be.

Question 1: What's one thing that you're really proud of?

This could be something you created, something you experienced, something you did. You see, this question is very important because most of us move so fast and are so critical of ourselves that we barely (if ever) take the time to stop and acknowledge how far we've come. I am SO guilty of that!

And this attitude is a sure-fire way to start the New Year feeling like a failure for 'not having done enough' or 'not having been productive enough'. We put so much pressure on ourselves (especially with those looooooooooooooong lists of resolutions) that we end up feeling defeated before even starting.

So, what I'd like you to do is name that one small (or big) thing that made your year. It could be something work-related or it could be health-related. For instance, you're now going to bed earlier so that you can wake up refreshed.

Bonus: Now you know what to tell others when they ask you how your year has been.

Question 2: What mistake did you do this year and how can you grow from that?

Take a bird's-eye view on your entire year, jot down what went wrong and what consequences those 'mistakes' had on your life (work, social, love, family etc.). It could be that you were drinking too much coffee to meet tight deadlines and this made you cranky which, in turn, made you snap for nothing at your kids.

This activity will help you to be more objective since it will allow you to review what went wrong with a little bit of distance and more perspective. I believe that this will make it easier to extract lessons from those 'mistakes' without beating yourself up and letting your ego get in the way. This should help you say 'hello' to a wiser, better version of yourself in 2017.

Question 3: What are you willing to let go of?

Yes, you could declutter your wardrobe or give away things you no longer need. But this question is more about commitments, projects or goals that:
