SSBBW / FA Quote of the Moment

"SSBBWs put the "s" in sexy and the "rouse" in arousal." ~ Phil [Poet and FA]

Self Acceptance and Society/Fat Acceptance

Self acceptance is loving and appreciating yourself even if there are things you'd eventually like to change. Fat acceptance or society acceptance is getting society as a whole to accept that we have the same rights as everyone else and to reduce prejudice within the community.

Things you can do every day to boost your body image:

Accepting August: My Hottest, but Happiest Month

As a middle-aged SSBBW, I have seldom, if ever, been an ardent fan of August. In my world, August usually means being hot, sticky and sweaty-the three levels of discomfort I abhor. This month can bring out the absolute worst in me, from heat discomfort to abundant grumpiness, so in order to attempt to get myself out my inevitable self-imposed August funk, I turn to the celebrations calendar to find that August is, in fact, Admit You're Happy Month.

Sometimes finding your happiness is just a reminder away. In order to eradicate the discomforts of August from my consciousness, I did some happiness soul-searching and find what makes me happiest about August.

And then suddenly, there it was-my August ah-ha moment!

Like any grandparent, my grandchildren bring me enormous joy. There's something about being a grandparent that even surpasses being a parent. It's a separate and unique, almost inexplicable kind of love.

Five years ago this August, my granddaughter, then three-and-a-half years old, came to live with me permanently through a Child Protective Services intervention. I had prayed for her safety and happiness and God, in turn, answered my prayers by bringing her to live with me.

When my granddaughter came to me that hot, sweltering August day, my life changed forever. At 45, I thought my child-rearing days were far in the past. I was at the age where I started looking forward to my "twilight years," to relaxing and maybe even doing some traveling. All that changed with the arrival of a sweet little girl and looking back, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I have found that being a parent again in middle-age is probably the most trying, tiring, exhausting-and rewarding job you can ever have. As I always say, there's a reason people in their 20s and 30s are raising children. It's easier when you have the energy and stamina to do it. Sometimes I wonder where I muster up the energy to do what I do every day: working a full-time job, caring for a child and keeping my mind straight.

Now when I think of how August is the anniversary month of my granddaughter's arrival to safety and security in my home, I am able to think of August differently. It is a true blessing and honor to be her grandmother and guardian and suddenly August as Admit You're Happy Month makes perfect sense.

I can accept that I can have a hot, sweltering and uncomfortable relationship with the heat and humidity of August while also accepting that August has also brought an immeasurable joy and happiness to my life through my granddaughter.

The lesson here is that you can turn any uncomfortable situation (or month) into something positive if you look hard enough for the good, the joy and the memories that bring your heart joy.

I have accepted that August may never be the most physically comfortable month for me, but now that I've taken a closer look, it will always be the month that has-literally-brought me the utmost joy and pride through my granddaughter.

I wish you all the ability to accept that you can turn any negative in your lives, whether it's a hot and sweaty month you hate or a situation that has plagued you for far too long, into something memorable and joyous. The search is worth it.

May you all have a cool and beautiful August, this awesome Admit You're Happy Month.
