SSBBW / FA Quote of the Moment

"Being attracted to a SSBBW, I can say with honesty and certainty that I find everything about a SSBBW to be a beautiful thing. From the large and soft curves of her body, to her large and open heart. A large woman often sees life as others do not; seeing everyday as precious, every moment as a moment to laugh and love, and those around them as people to treasure. Being a SSBBW is a blessing. With lots to offer, every large woman is unique, yet not alone. I am proud to be a man who loves and appreciates all you have to offer. Be proud of what you have, flaunt your beautiful curves, and let the world see that big smile." ~ John [FA]

Reviews of movies, tv shows and ssbbw/bbw art and artists

Do you know of a movie or tv show that features ssbbw/bbw that you'd like us to review? Or perhaps you want to write a review yourself and see it in print! Or maybe you know of some great ssbbw/bbw art you want us to showcase. Let us know at info@ssbbw-magazine.com.

Toni: First of all, thank you so much for virtually sitting down on my artist couch! I'm a big fan of your work, and I'm glad to have you here.

Juan: It's my pleasure, thank you for doing the article of my artwork.

Toni: Let's get right to it! When did you begin creating your SSBBW masterpieces?

Juan: Well, I wouldn't call them masterpieces, but thank you for your compliment. I love women of all sizes but I have always had a preference for plus sized women, to me they are beautiful. I have been drawing them since I was a teenager. Some of the illustrations on my Facebook page are quite old. These drawings were never intended to be public. Once I decided to start posting them, much to my surprise, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Something I'm grateful for and don't take for granted.

Toni: Is there a particular theme that draws you more often than others?

Juan: I get bored doing the same thing over and over again, but if there is one theme that I end up coming back to, it is the female body. However, I do not have a specific type of body that I like to draw all the time. If you take a look at my Facebook page, you will see the diversity in shapes and sizes of the women I draw.

Toni: What mediums have you worked in and what's your favorite?

Juan: I've worked with most mediums and I'm always looking to try different ones, right now I'm trying to get plaster, epoxy and fiberglass to work together, with some lacquer and enamel paint thrown in there for good measure. It's great fun. Working with pencil is my favorite. It's like second nature to me.

Toni: What inspires you creatively?

Juan: I have always had a fascination with the human body, mainly women and yes, primarily plus size women in all their wonderfully different shapes and sizes. While it may not be my only inspiration, it is a big part.

Toni: Do you have a favorite piece, and may we see it? If so, why is it your favorite?

Juan: "Bottoms Up", I painted this in 1990, it was the first time I realized I could paint things that I liked and enjoyed instead of things I thought I should, there's a big difference. Sometime later I stopped painting for a number of years. To help me get started again I thought I would revisit some of the paintings I had done before, when I got to "Bottoms Up" I knew exactly what I wanted to do, that's how "Bottoms Up (Reprised)" was created, which in retrospect seems oddly appropriate. Still one of my favorites.

Toni: Is there anything you hope to convey to the viewer through your artwork?

Juan: Everyone is different and that's a good thing, if there is anything that you take with you from my artwork, I hope it's that.

Toni: Can you tell us about some of the projects you have going on right now, both SSBBW related and non?

Juan: I'm in the process of adding color to some of my penciled artwork with an eye on creating signed and numbered limited prints. I'm also putting together a couple of sketch books collecting some of my penciled artworks. These to, will have limited print runs. I have a few other art related projects in the works, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Toni: Is there a place we can purchase your work, and do you accept commissions?

Juan: Right now the best place to view and purchase my original artwork is on my Facebook page. Just message me for pricing and availability. I do commissions but I'm limiting them to 11" x 14" penciled illustrations because of time constraints. There is a site called "Fine Arts America" that sells prints of most of my paintings. I also have a regular website, a work in progress, where I sometimes sell prints and originals. Everyone is welcomed to check it out, and if I'm not selling anything there at any given moment you can still look at the pretty pictures.

Toni: Is there anything else you'd like to tell us?

Juan: Perception, it's a funny thing. I believe that how you see yourself is how most people will perceive you. What I find a lot of times with women of size is their lack of confidence in their appearance and that bothers me because I can see how beautiful they are. When plus size women have confidence in themselves and are comfortable in their own bodies, they are stunning. That is how I try to draw them, full of confidence and sexual energy. I try to express this attitude with the titles I give my illustrations and paintings as well.

Thanks so much!

About Artist Juan Alcantara - "From illustrating comic books to getting magazines ready for publication, I've worked most of my life as a graphics illustrator. Recently I've turned my interest towards painting giving me the freedom to discover diverse art styles. From painting ultra realistic to expressionist and combining the two art forms. Coming up with my own unique style is a challenge but a fun one. I was born June 16, 1958 in Havana, Cuba and was brought to the United States by my parents in 1963. I studied art in Miami Dade Community College. I also studied art under Ramon Lapayese, a great painter from Madrid, Spain."
