Heavy Weight Yoga
I have been curious about yoga for a while. Yoga is physical/mental/spiritual practices that aim to transform the body and mind. If your insides are right, it will show on the outside. Beauty does come from within. Watching yoga classes from afar at my gym, they are a little intimidating. The participants look the same and I would have no idea what I was doing if I attended. How would you do some of the moves with a big belly or boobs? How would you work with bad knees? What if you can't get on the floor? Enter Abby Lentz.
A friend of mine posted on Facebook that she was attending a "HeavyWeight Yoga" retreat. I had never heard of it and was intrigued, so I followed the link and found out about Abby Lentz. Abby has been practicing yoga since 1974. Being outside "the normal" body size, she often found standard moves didn't work for her body and she was usually the largest (sometimes only) person in her class. She decided to become an instructor and help every body do yoga.
I decided to attend retreat. This Friday through Sunday event was nestled among the piney woods in central Texas at Camp Allen. I really wasn't sure what to expect. Abby contacted all of the participants before the retreat to ask about special needs and yoga equipment. I didn't have any and was grateful for the loaner pieces Abby provided.
I am usually the largest person in a room. I was happy to see all body shapes and sizes at this retreat. There were thinner women and women just like me. No judgment, just yoga and comradery. There were beginners and advanced students. All age groups were represented as well. If you couldn't get up and down from the floor, she showed us moves from a chair. All levels of mobility and experience were accommodated.
Beyond the yoga were the stories and the connection with the other women attending. I was really fortunate to be able to attend and get recharged and inspired. I have been feeling a bit stuck in my life lately….no passion, no goals, just existing day to day. The retreat kicked me in the pants and helped me get unstuck.
Abby does have DVDs available to do yoga at home. I believe she is also going to show up on Netflix and the like soon. I purchased the DVDs at the retreat and have enjoyed yoga at home. Not as great as Abby in person, but they will do until I can attend one of her classes/events again!

Fat Positive Blogs
Blogs are a wonderful source of information. I have found them to be a useful Fat resource, especially when it comes to body positivity and fatshion. It is so helpful to see what clothes look like on bodies that are shaped like ours. It is also helpful to know that there are others out there who have the same life struggles that we have. You might get a different perspective on how to deal with things, based on the experiences of others. SSBBW mag has a blog section. If you haven't checked it out, you should! SSBBW Magazine Blogs
I recently joined a group of plus size bloggers. We are taking one fashion topic a month and doing a blog hop. Our first topic was leggings. We all did a blog about it, linked our blogs, and published them at the same time. It is so great to see the many different ways an item can be worn on a fat person, from smaller plus to super plus.
Here is a link to my blog. In it, you will find the links to all the other blogs.
Here is a list of some fat positive blogs that might help you on your journey:
I know there are plenty more. I would love to hear about blogs you visit on a regular basis! Email me! <3
