One thing you'll pick up on while reading my articles is that I just LOVE my Netflix. Well, ladies and gents, I have found another jewel for you in the recesses of my Netflix queue. Wikipedia describes it as follows; The Vicar of Dibley was set in a fictional small Oxfordshire village called Dibley, which is assigned a female vicar following the 1992 changes in the Church of England that permitted the ordination of women.1
I've been meaning to check out this series for a while, but the dry description above as well as a certain trepidation for watching a sitcom starring a fat actress who I was sure was going to be slap sticking me with fat jokes left and right, kept me scrolling past it. Well I misjudged this quite silly and good time British comedy.
The Vicar of Dibley stars Dawn French, who I came into familiarity with via Dr. Who. The character she played there left much to be desired in that it involved a lot of flatulence and fat stereotypes. However, my best friend Google let me know right away that she was also the hilarious fat lady in Harry Potter. That was good enough for me. I am a total Harry Potter and Dr Who geek. She's in both. She's fat. She's fabulous, and she's unapologetic.
This quote popped up high on my search feed: "I'd like to decide what you may find funny about my fatness. For me there's a dignity in that... I am very fond of this body - it's served me well and it's never disappointed me." - Dawn French
I took the plunge and dove head-first into Dibley. I was not disappointed. Ms. French gives a wonderful performance. I fell in love right away with the lead character, Reverend Geraldine Granger. The Reverend is confident, smart, attractive, energetic, and will charm the pants right off of you! She comes in and shakes up the tired and dusty little village of Dibley and it's often less than bright occupants. It is a joy to romp alongside her as she stomps delightfully through the tulips.
David Horton: Owen, this is Geraldine. She's the new vicar.
Owen Newitt: No it isn't! She's a woman!
Geraldine Granger: Oh! You noticed! [Points to breasts] These are such a giveaway, aren't they?
There are a lot of guest stars on the show throughout the series, which ran from 1994-2007 and accrued all kinds of awards including two International Emmys. I am looking forward to one of my favorite actors Johnny Depp and his chiseled cheek bones making an appearance soon!
I gave this series five stars on Netflix. It may or may not be your cup of tea, but I guarantee if nothing else, you will enjoy seeing fat stereotypes being thrown on their heads in good fashion. It's fun and safe for the whole family.* So gather 'round and get ready to laugh. Where else can you attend church with a big, buttery bowl of popcorn?
*Geraldine tells a joke at the end of each episode, and they can get a little ribald, so I'd watch first to be sure it's ok for the kiddies...
"Three nuns die and end up at the gates of Heaven.
St Peter says that before they can enter, they must first each answer a question.
To the first he asks "who were the first humans?" She says "Adam and Eve" and he lets her in.
To the second he asks "where did they live?" She says "In the garden of Eden" and she too is admitted.
Then he asks the third, "What was the first thing Eve said to Adam?"
She replies "My goodness that's a hard one" - and he opens the gate and lets her in."
