"I don't even think of myself as an SSBBW. It's just a label, just like blonde is. I am a beautiful, caring, passionate person. Period." ~ Joanne [SSBBW]

Plus Size Mannequins

Maybe things are headed in the right direction. There has been a lot of talk about Christina Aguilera’s weight gain recently. Photos of her in tight clothes have been all over the place, causing “is this a fashion do or don’t” style debate. Christina, Adele, and Melissa McCarthy all are outside the cookie cutter for what is acceptable and considered beautiful, body wise. Maybe because of these women, the fashion industry is listening. There has been a trend for “larger” mannequins of late. The Telegraph reported:

"One of the UK’s largest shop mannequin companies has reported a surge in orders for clothes dummies sized 12 and above. Over the last year Displaysense, which supplies some of the UK’s biggest clothing chains with mannequins, has seen a 16 per cent increase in sales of "plus-size" window dummies. At one point the company sold out of larger models as it struggled to keep up with demand, a company spokesman said. In total, sales of large mannequins have risen from 4,600 units to well over 5,000 in the last year."

It is a small step, and I will take it! A size 12 is nowhere near my size 32/34/36 body. But, it is way closer than a size 0!

I am fat and I have had to retrain my own way of thinking. I have been judged for so long, that was the first thing I would do with someone else: size them up! In addition to that, I have been programmed by the news, Hollywood, Disney, my family into automatically criticizing someone based on their appearance. My first thought was always “she is beautiful”, “he has bad teeth”, “she shouldn’t be wearing that shirt”, “look at the nose on her”. Wrong, wrong, WRONG!!!! Maybe that is the only shirt that person has to wear. Maybe the person with bad teeth has some illness that has caused them to rot or discolor. I have had to learn to speak and think from love, not from hate. Beauty comes in all shapes and forms. It does start with each and every one of us. We might think we don’t have a voice, but we do. From how you act to where you spend your money, it all matters.
