SSBBW / FA Quote of the Moment

"What do I like about being an SSBBW? There are a couple of things that come to mind. I love that SSBBW's seem to represent all the goodness and kindness of the human race. We exude love; love for people, love for food, love for life. Also, on a personal note, I have found an advantage to being an SSBBW. Our society is shallow. Putting looks and thinness above all other qualities. As an SSBBW, we have a way of weeding out those shallow people, and find the "good" people; the people that dont care about size, and see us for the people we are inside." ~ Ceci [SSBBW]

Jeff's Review Corner

This past month, I had to obey my inner nerd and went out to see Men in Black 3, the much-delayed sequel of the MIB movies. I say “much-delayed” despite never having heard any particular plans for doing another before now. A lot of critics are already weighing in on this film, well before I ever got to see it, so I understand many will expect me to tear the movie apart. However, if you’re expecting that, you’re going to be awful disappointed. The movie wasn’t anything amazing, but it was still pretty good.

Today’s Film: Men in Black 3

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones reprise the roles of Agent J and K in the Men in Black organization, a sort of Interpol that oversees alien visitation, immigration and technology between Earth and all other worlds. While clearly the 14 years since the first film and this one has taken its toll on Smith, who lacks the previously overflowing charisma he had in the first film, rapid-fire comedic moments keep his character seeming energetic and interesting and the age difference is something I’ve yet to see anybody else mention – something I feel is more than a mote unfair to the guy who willingly played a part in the cinematic bomb that was Seven Pounds. Jones, on the other hand, plays only an extremely minor role in the film, only present early and very late in the film as if they forced him to appear for continuity’s sake in light of being unable to get Rip Torn to reprise his role as Zed.

When a truly monstrous alien creature known as Boris the Animal (portrayed with all-too-limited screen time by Jemaine Clement) escapes a specially-designed moon prison base made for alien inmates far too dangerous to manage on Earth, he seeks out a mad inventor’s son and takes a device allowing him to travel back to 1969 in order to kill Agent K in the past, preventing the loss of one of his arms, his future imprisonment and the advent of a shield known as ArcNet which leads to the downfall of his conqueror race. After realizing he’s the only one who remembers K the next morning, J chases after Boris into the past in order to stop the timeline from being altered but due to a slip-up, ends up partnering with a 40-years-younger version of his partner (played by Josh Brolin).

The film actually begins as J and K investigate what was supposed to be a routine situation in a Chinese restaurant run by alien beings. This scene is a little grating as it relies on extremely low-brow humor, the sort that every review of Men in Black 2 universally panned. Once that scene is interrupted by Boris’ arrival on Earth, things genuinely pick up with some rapid-fire well done comedic lines as Will Smith ventures to the past and the second act picks up. The Younger K is an interesting character in that we finally get to witness a more human side to the otherwise stoic and hardened Jones character, but I feel the ultimate weakness in this portrayal was Brolin trying too hard to mimic Jones’ mannerisms of the previous films, despite being more open and talkative with his foil. We also get a glimpse into J’s history as well, which was actually a surprisingly touching moment, despite the chronology of it all being more than a touch confusing.

Refreshingly, the movie largely plays out as a period piece and the concepts of time travel are not actually abused, rather, used only once after J leaps to the past in a fairly clever use of the mechanics. I think the missed opportunities here largely stems from J, as a black man in an era where racism was still present in a large scale, only really gets to play around with the cultural mores one time in the entire film, so I feel the setting didn’t get used quite enough. The action is well-done and use of hyper-futuristic weapons gets its due fanfare, as expected, and the idea is even explored a bit more as the younger K has a Neuralizer hooked up to a battery pack that makes old modem noises in a rather clever and amusing nod to the scale of technology.

I’ve actually seen the film twice theatrically now due to both my sister and a friend both wanting to see it on two separate days and due to clever use of the time traveling elements of the plot I was surprised at just how multi-layered the movie really is. This is the sort of movie you notice new things each time you watch it and actually seeing it more than once heightened my opinion of the story as a whole. I would easily say it’s the 2nd-best of the three films and is worth a viewing, even if just a matinee. Of course, I’m one of the mutant anomalies who genuinely enjoyed Men in Black 2, citing only some of the low-brow comedy and short run time as the major failings, so take it as you’d like. Give it a fair shake and you might find something surprisingly fun and you might too. See for yourself.
