Learn a New Craft in 2012

A new year can be a new time to learn something new. Keeping the mind engaged in challenging activities is not only fun, but studies have shown it can be a factor in preventing age-related memory loss. So as a way of combining entertainment, arts and health, check out the different crafts you can learn online that you can take into the "real world".

With a little of something for everyone, a new world of crafts (sorry, no WOW!) awaits!

Origami Resource Center
Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into beautiful, sculpture-like pieces of art. Created in the 17th century AD, the completed piece is done without cutting or gluing. If nothing less, you can always create a paper cup in an emergency.
Teach Yourself to Crochet
Sometimes treated as the little sister to knitting (see below), crocheting is an art form all its own. Using a single needle and a variety of techniques, an afghan or cozy sweater is only a couple of weeks away!
Learn to Knit
Knitting is an age-old craft with new relevancy. Creating something beautiful from a skein of yarn can be satisfying and can yield a bounty of gifts for loved ones.
Woodcarving is making a comeback as people learn to appreciated the work that goes into handmade crafts. It can be as simple as a soft piece of wood and a knife or more complex with multiple tools required. Either way, makes something new with an old technique.
Paper Making
Paper is not just something for the printer or to be balled up as a makeshift basketball for the trash bin. Making your own paper can unleash a wealth of creativity as you add bits and pieces to the slurry to make it unique. It is also environmentally friendly!
Bonsai Gardening
Fans of the original "Karate Kid" will remember the little bonsai trees carefully tended to by Mr. Miyagi. Grow, prune, and take care of your own little tree. Evergreen, deciduous, and even fruit trees and shrubs are all varieties available from which to choose. Bring a tiny piece of nature indoors.
Make Your Own Jewelry
Save money and show off your creativity. From a stocking necklace to a bit of metal work and beading. Express yourself and be truly unique. You can use things from around the house or make a trip to the craft store for supplies. It is all up to you.
Whip out the twine and get knotting. If you remember the 70s, you remember macramé. This DIY craft is great for family members of all ages. You can make jewelry as well as hammocks, plant hangers, and more. You are only limited by your imagination.
Ummmm….nothing here interests me
Do not despair! There is a craft out there for you. Just try clicking around to see what suits your fancy and budget! There are plenty of ideas just waiting to be found. Don't wait…learn something new today!

Leonard Nimoy

Leonard Nimoy, 80 years old, is well known for playing the character Spock in the original Star Trek series. However, along with his work on stage and screen he has also written a few books and produced a number of albums of vocal recordings. In 2003 he announced his retirement from acting in order to concentrate on his photography. His most recent project is called "Maximum Beauty: An examination of our concepts of beauty and sexuality". A book called "The Full Body Project" was published in December 2007. His pictures of BBWs show them as proud and accepting.

"He knows that he is an unlikely champion for the size-acceptance movement; body image is a topic he never really thought about before. But for the last eight years, Mr. Nimoy, who is 76 and an established photographer, has been snapping pictures of plus-size women in all their naked glory." [New York Times - May 2007]

Here is a Sample of Leonard's new photos.

"We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day." - Edith Lovejoy Pierce

"The proper behavior all through the holiday season is to be drunk. This drunkenness culminates on New Year's Eve, when you get so drunk you kiss the person you're married to."
