One thing you can expect every holiday season is the multitude of Christmas movies and television shows available throughout the month of December. Every year there are the classic movies like "Holiday Inn", "It's a Wonderful Life" and "White Christmas" and then there are the new ones like the "The Santa Claus" parts 1, 2 and 3 or last years "Fred Claus" and this years "Four Christmases". Don't forget the tv shows such as the ever popular "Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer", "A Charlie Brown Christmas", and "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas". And many sitcoms and dramas do their own Christmas episdoes as well.
Whether its the classics or the newer movies, the cartoons, the specials or the variety shows we all have our favorites; the one that we must watch every year. For me it's "Miracle on 34th Street" (the original one and preferably the non-colorized) and "The Christmas Story". And of course it's not Christmas until I've seen "The Grinch". It's amazing how something so simple can make one feel. It transports me back to my childhood. I sit on the edge of the sofa with a big grinch grin on my face, singing along and giggling like a school girl. Ah the power of television!!

Fernando Botero has made a hugely successful art career of portraying the lushness of the fuller figure. In paintings, sketches, and sculpture, Botero expresses the joyful and mundane side of life as big, beautiful people. In more specific artistic terms, "Botero depicts women, men, daily life, historical events and characters, milestones of art, still-life, animals and the natural world in general, with exaggerated and disproportionate volumetry, accompanied by fine details of scathing criticism, irony, humor, and ingenuity." (from Wikipedia entry). Fernando Botero celebrates the fat.
Not one to shy away from controversy, Botero's maverick streak is sometime attributed to his training as a matador starting at 12 years old or to the death of his father when Botero was four. Whatever, the reason he makes no apologies for his attraction to drawing the fuller figure, nor for the political content of some of his work. While some critics may malign his work because of the content (fat people), he is one of the most highly regarded living artist with works selling the millions of dollars and with works displayed in galleries around the world including the The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington D.C.)
At 80 years old, Botero has no plans to retire as he told the Los Angeles Times in a recent article. He says, "expects to go out with 'a paintbrush in my hand,'". For a quick overview of the artist, read his Wikipedia entry, or you can just skip to the art by visiting the websites below. While they are not comprehensive, they are a good start!

"May the lights of Hanukkah usher in a better world for all humankind."
"[I]t is the one season of the year when we can lay aside all gnawing worry, indulge in sentiment without censure, assume the carefree faith of childhood, and just plain "have fun." Whether they call it Yuletide, Noel, Weinachten, or Christmas, people around the earth thirst for its refreshment as the desert traveller for the oasis."
