Hairstyles for Plus Size Women

A reader wrote in requesting info on hairstyles for plus size women.

I put a lot of trust in my hairdresser. When I go in, I usually tell her to do what she wants. She knows my style and is the professional. I don’t think I have ever walked out and not been happy with the results. A good stylist knows your hair and what can be done with it, as well as, taking your face shape/size, body proportions, and lifestyle into consideration. Some people just don’t want to fuss with their hair, while others have the time and inclination to spend hours fixing their hair.

Doing research for this article, two hairstyles kept popping up: the long bob and the long layered cut. “Long” means shoulder length (see below). I searched for plus size women with these cuts and I couldn’t find pictures!

Long BobLong Layered Cut

For both styles, layering is the key. Round, full faces do better with layers towards the bottom part of the face because they lengthen it. Whether your hair is curly or straight, excess bulk should be removed between the chin and the neck. Highlights are another way to trick the eye. They can create the illusion of a slimmer face.

Doing research for this article, everything I read said to stay away from any extremes: extremely short, extremely long, extremely trendy. I always have to add, do what makes you feel good. I have seen larger women with short and long hair and they have looked great! If you feel good and look happy, that translates. Yes, it does help if you have the right tools to begin with, but, you should always do what makes you happy!
