Taking Care Of Winter Skin

I live in Texas. Most of the time the humidity in the air keeps my skin nice and hydrated. Even with mild winters, my skin can get super dry, flakey, and crack. That look might work for a reptile, but it doesn’t really work for big girls. We look soft and fluffly….we should be soft and fluffy!! Here are some tips for keeping you hydrated and smooth for snuggle weather.

Moisturize: Yes, even in the winter months, we need to make sure we apply lotion. Using oil based lotions help retain moisture in the harsh winter months.

Sunscreen: The sun in the winter can still damage skin.

Take care of your hands and feet: The elements can be hard on the thin skin of your hands. They can get dry and crack quicker than the rest of your body. Gloves can protect your hands. Feet need extra special treatment in the winter months. Using petroleum jelly or glycerine based lotions will help keep your feet from cracking. Exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells.

Avoid wet clothing: it can irritate and dry out skin.

Drink water: hydrate your skin from within.

Use a humidifier: As soon as we start using heat in our homes, we loose moisture in the air. Humidifiers will keep moisture in the air and help prevent skin from drying out.

Avoid extremely hot showers or baths: they can actually dry out the skin.

Don’t lick your lips: keep some form of lip balm on hand and don’t lick your lips! This can irritate them and make them crack.

A few simple tips to help us retain moisture and continue to look radiant through the winter months!
