Reduce Stress During the Holidays

The holidays can be a stressful time. All the hustle and bustle, family, obligations, etc can add up to making you look and feel older. We all want to put our best foot forward when dealing with potentially stressful situations and people. Here are some tips to keep you looking and feeling your best during this crazy season!

Get plenty of rest. Not only will you feel better, but plenty of rest can help prevent getting sick.

Adequate water and eating healthy can go a long way. Also, if you do exercise, keep up with your routine. Exercise is a great way to combat stress.

Lower your expectations. You donít have to attend every party or event. Your friends and family arenít going to notice that everything isnít decorated or done to the nth degree. It is about being together and making memories. No one really remembers the details. They remember the togetherness.

Remember the importance of the season. Are you religious? Is it about spending time with loved ones? Focus on that and not the commercial aspect of the holiday.

Remember last year. What did you swear you would never do again?

Keep a to do list, or several. What are the things that you absolutely need to get done? What would you like to get done if you had all the time in the world? What /who do you need to buy for? Enlist the help of your spouse or children to cross things off your list. Asking for help is ok. Making gifts with the kids can be a great bonding experience and be very meaningful mementos.

For me, a lot of my stress comes from the fight for parking spaces. I shop online or via catalog as much as possible. Gift cards are another favorite of mine. I usually try to include a little something homemade, even a card, with the gift card to add a personal touch.

When shopping, make sure you understand return policy. Asking questions and having as much information as you can could help save time and a headache later.

Try to take a moment for yourself each dayÖa soak in the tub, a holiday story with the kids, a glass of wine. Whatever it is, take a moment to clear your mind and re-charge. Even if it is only for a few minutes.

Look at your stressors and try to shelve the ones you have no control over. You canít help the economy, the weatherÖ..try to focus on things you can take care of, not those that you canít.

Remember, it is okay to be imperfect. We all are and that is what makes us unique. Trying to create the perfect situation is a sure fire way to lead to disaster. Things are going to go wrongÖbut it is the togetherness that matters most. What you make of these moments is what you will remember. Sometimes the best memories are not the planned and thought out ones. They are the ones that just happen. I wish you all a safe, healthy, happy, and stress free holiday!!!
