Alterting Clothes to Fit Big Hips

I have big hips. It is just the way I am made. Not necessarily a pear, but not an hourglass either. Somewhere in the middle…a pearglass LOL. Shopping for shirts can sometimes be a little bit trying. I might find something that fits through my shoulders but doesn’t fit my hips, and vice versa.

Recently I found a black shirt from Catherine’s that I loved. I didn’t try it on, because it was my size. I just knew it would fit and be a great shirt! When I finally tried to wear the shirt, I discovered it was way too snug through my hip area. I was sad. Instead of taking it back, I decided to keep it and make it work!

I am sure there are plenty of seamstresses, alteration places, etc. in your area that could help you in this situation if you can’t sew/don’t have a sewing machine. I am kinda crafty and thought I could do it myself. I went to the fabric store and found a material I liked that I thought went with the shirt. I bought about a ¼ yard of it. I split the seams at the bottom of the shirt. I cut the purchased fabric into two triangles the same length as the split in the seam. The width of the triangles would be the extra number of inches needed. In this case, I wanted 10 extra inches. My triangles are both about 5 inches in width. (See diagram below). I then sewed that triangle into the split. Viola! A shirt that fits my hips and has some of my character in it!
