AN SSBBWs WORLD

Information and rants about living in the real world as an SSBBW

As SSBBWs, we live in a world built for smaller people. Each day we face challenges to fit in, or even to just fit. While education and information are powerful tools, our best resource is each other. Let us know your tips or rants about this subject at info@ssbbw-magazine.com.

SSBBW Profile

Each month we try to profile an SSBBW to help inspire those SSBBWs who haven't yet gotten that they are wonderful, caring, sexy, special people. We are always looking for more great and wonderful SSBBWs that feel they can be an inspiration to others to be profiled. Send us a mail if you are interested!!

Editor's Rant

While I was online researching for the article on Gabourey Sidibe, I came across a number of newspaper and online articles regarding her weight. Most notably was Howard Stern, who on his radio show in early March said, “There’s the most enormous, fat black chick I’ve ever seen. She is enormous. Everyone’s pretending she’s a part of show business, and she’s never going to be in another movie,” he said. “She should have gotten the Best Actress award because she’s never going to have another shot. What movie is she gonna be in?”

Alot of news agencies picked up on this and although some disagreed most of them agreed with what he said. They said she wouldn't get other parts unless she lost considerable weight. I think she's already proven that she's a great actress and the issue isn't that she won't fit any new parts but that parts aren't being written for large women. Writers and entertainment executives need to look out of their windows now and then and see that the world is changing and not everyone is a skinny-minny anymore.

So why were there lots of overweight men who were huge stars and had movies written for them? What about John Candy, Chris Farley, John Goodman - to name but a few.

Even when they do write a part for a large woman they do it wrong. Either by putting a slim woman in a fat suit (Shallow Hal - Gwyneth Paltrow) or having the actress gain 20 lbs and call her fat (Bridget Jone's Diary - Renée Zellweger).

There are a few exceptions, such as Queen Latifah, whom I adore but there needs to be more.

Come on Hollywood, wake up!!!!
