Forget Your Weight, It's About Loving Yourself!
Loving yourself and overcoming insecurity - that is what Nikki Blonsky is hoping people will get from her recently released Lifetime Original Movie, Queen Sized.
The 19-year-old star of the 2007 version of "Hairspray" took on the starring role of the Lifetime movie about a teenager named Maggie. Being overweight, Maggie learned to deal with regularly being picked on by kids at school. So, the pranksters took their joke to what they thought was a new level, putting her on the homecoming ballot. Faced with two options, Maggie decides to get the best of those who thought of the joke, by taking on the challenge and staying in the race for homecoming queen and court. Her courage not only helped her overcome their ridicule, but it also gave hope to others who were part of the less-than-perfect persecuted youth.
The movie was created out of a real story, and that is not a surprise to Blonsky. She says she well understood the character she was playing. Just out of high school, she has memories of being picked on for being overweight and not fitting in during her elementary and middle school years. But she says this story of triumph over is not just for those overweight, but also those who have any type of insecurity, whether it's because of their height, weight, or any thing else that they have to deal with. In her case, she got past being picked with the help of a strong and supportive family that taught her that those who pick on you are just doing it to feel better about their insecurities.
Blonsky says the most important thing to remember is that you're not alone, even if it seems that way. While you may feel like you are the only person going through these things, there are plenty of others, around the world, dealing with it too.
Next she says you have to learn how to love yourself. As soon as you love yourself, the way you are, it won't matter what other people think or say and you can toss that insecurity right out the window.
In her own life, Blonsky sure got the last laugh on those who picked on her in the past. She has been nominated for a Golden Globe for her "Hairspray" performance, and is going to put her voice to work, creating an original CD.
