On The Rise

From the very first time a picture appeared on a television set to what is the current beauty rage in socially accepted magazines, one area that has always been deficient is the image of a real woman. A fairly high percentage of American women most certainly weigh more than 110 pounds, unlike the ideal female portrayed in the media.

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey and seventies singer Mama Cass are just a few idols that paved the way for larger women to be recognized in show business; current faces of plus sized gals include star Mo’Nique Imes and new actress Nikki Blonsky. All four of these well-known superstars have addressed the difficulty of being in the public eye and being overweight.

Fat acceptance is, in fact, on the rise, however. With many high profile names becoming involved with NAAFA (National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance) and plus sized modeling developing into a growing trend, it’s almost inevitable that the Rubenesque era may very well resurface. Especially with the growing increase of music completely devoted to the love of us large ladies. It’s almost as if big girl lovers were in a secret club that nobody dared speak of. That is until people like Sir Mix-a-lot let the cat out of the bag with his infamous line “To the beanpole thing in the magazine – you ain’t ‘It’, Miss Thing!”

The music industry is definitely at the top of big girl acceptance nowadays. A great artist and song to check out is Mika, “Big Girl You Are Beautiful”. It’s a fun spirited, Euro-techno beat dedicated to the loveliness of the curvaceous. Mika admitted in a promotional interview for another project, "I was flying to Los Angeles the next day and I can never sleep because I hate flying so much. So I was watching trashy television, it was two o'clock in the morning, a Victoria Wood documentary on Channel 4. It was about fat people in the United States and she visited a club called the Butterfly Lounge, which was the first place of its kind, a club for larger women to hang out in. Skinny women were not being allowed in. The women were amazing and I absolutely felt as if I had to write about them. I muted the television and wrote it straight away. It is one of my favorite tracks and brilliant to play live. Everyone sings along!"

Holiday Television

One thing you can expect every holiday season is the multitude of Christmas movies and television shows available throughout the month of December. Every year there are the classic movies like "Holiday Inn", "It's a Wonderful Life" and "White Christmas" and then there are the new ones like the "The Santa Claus" parts 1, 2 and 3 or last years "Fred Claus" and this years "Four Christmases". Don't forget the tv shows such as the ever popular "Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer", "A Charlie Brown Christmas", and "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas". And many sitcoms and dramas do their own Christmas episdoes as well.

Whether its the classics or the newer movies, the cartoons, the specials or the variety shows we all have our favorites; the one that we must watch every year. For me it's "Miracle on 34th Street" (the original one and preferably the non-colorized) and "The Christmas Story". And of course it's not Christmas until I've seen "The Grinch". It's amazing how something so simple can make one feel. It transports me back to my childhood. I sit on the edge of the sofa with a big grinch grin on my face, singing along and giggling like a school girl. Ah the power of television!!
